The Latest in Obesity News

Obesity- related news from the past week!

January 20 - Washington, DC:
In a meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, Michelle Obama announced her plans to launch a major initiativemichelle obama to fight against childhood obesity in February. Her idea is "To put in place common-sense initiatives and solutions that empower families and communities to make healthy decisions for their kids." For an article discussing her plans, click here.

January 18 - Boston, MA: As part of a Governor Deval Patrick's major campaign to fight childhood obesity, Public health officials require that all public schools in the state calculate BMI for students in the first, fourth, seventh, and tenth grades. Although this initiative launched last year, the child on scalestate expects that schools will increase screenings this month, freeing up time that was used earlier in the year for administering swine flu vaccines. For more details on this campaign, click here.

January 13 - New York, NY: The Centers for Disease Control released data suggesting that obesity rates for Americans may have reached a plateau. While the percentages of obese Americans are not increasing, they are remaining constant at very high levels. According to the CDC, "Nearly 34 percent of adults are obese, more than double the percentage 30 years ago. The share of obese children tripled during that time, to 17 percent." Among experts, the debate over the progress of the obesity epidemic continues. For a New York Times article discussing the findings, click here. cdc

January 12 - Cambridge, MA: The Institute for Community Health (ICH), a collaboration of Massachusetts health care systems, has been awarded a Harvard Catalyst Pilot Grant to develop a targeted intervention to reduce obesity among African-American youth. ICH's Dr. Chomitz says that although Black and Hispanic children are twice as likely to be overweight or obese, "Currently, there exists little evidence on effective interventions to reduce BMI disparities among communities of color." Recipe for a Strong Community

What makes a community strong?

Families who give love
They are always in our hearts

Knowledge and education
Will make us a stronger community and nation

People need to step up and DO SOMETHING!

Plant a tree
Keep it clean
Our community needs oxygen to breathe.
Help someone if they're down
Don't feed the violence
Promote peace!

That's our recipe for a strong community!

Poem of the week!

I Am Strong

I'm strong
I am very strong
I may not look strong, but I am

Maybe not like a superhero
I don't have to be
Superman to be strong

I just need knowledge, that's all
I learn from my family, teachers, and friends
Which makes me stronger and stronger each day

I'm strong with abilities and knowledge
Now I can outsmart any challenge

People may not notice all of these things
But I know I'm strong

I'm strong just like a dolphin
I'm not talking about its strength
I'm talking about its intelligence

I'm strong enough to do my best
Not to fall into bad choices

Are you strong enough?

Help us Make 2010 A New Year for Kids!

On January 4, we launched our social media campaign, "A New Year for Kids," encouraging our followers to post their New Year's Resolutions in support of kids across the country.

Help us re-frame traditional New Year's Resolutions and have people pledge to improve the lives of children in 2010 instead of concentrating their efforts on themselves.

Poem of the week!

The Way I Am

Some people are quitters
But I never give up

Some people are negative
But I strive to stay positive

I show a good attitude
And aim to be the best

When I'm down I frown
But I'll get up with a smile

My sister's been saying
that for a while

Be polite and respectful
to all living beings

Clean up after myself
And put away my things

Go outside and be active,
I enjoy being a kid

My mom taught me how
to read and write before school did

It makes me smile
to see my friends

It makes me happy
to be with them again

No one else knows
what I know about me

There's a lock in my head
And I have the master key
